Mental Health Solutions: 3 Types Of Therapy

With many different mental illnesses, therapy can be a good tool to combat and overcome those troubles. Even if you do not believe one type of therapy is the right fit for you, there are several other types to try before you rule it out. Everyone's illness is different so their path to recovery will be different too. 

Types of Therapy

Your doctor may recommend a certain type of therapy, but if you try it and do not feel any progress, do not hesitate to share that with your doctor or therapist. You can always try a different mental health solution. 

Individual Therapy

When you think of therapy, this is the type of therapy you will generally think of. Individual therapy is one-on-one between a patient and a therapist. During this therapy, your therapist will ask you questions and listen to your story to help come up with coping mechanisms and a personalized treatment plan.

Some therapists will send their patients home with homework (e.g., have a difficult conversation, complete a difficult task they have been avoiding, journal, etc.) to help with the treatment process. Homework may not work with all patients so do not worry if your therapist does not give you any. 

Group Therapy

Group therapy is common for people who have gone through a trauma and feel alone or misunderstood because of it. Group therapy will usually include therapy with a few other people who are also going through the same thing (e.g., difficult illness, loss of a child/spouse, substance abuse, etc.).

This is a good type of therapy if you feel alone and like no one understands or has gone through what you have. It allows you to listen to other peoples' stories and connect with other people who know exactly how you feel. Your group can help you feel less alone in your pain. 

Art Therapy

Some may stray away from art therapy because it is thought that you need to be artistic to participate. This is simply not true. No matter what your skill level is, you can participate and benefit from art therapy. Art therapy allows you to create a piece of art to express what you feel about a certain topic. 

There are benefits in simply creating a piece of art to express your feelings, but once your piece is complete you will be able to see those feelings and discuss with your therapist how the piece makes you feel and how you felt during the creation process.
