Perrigo applies to FDA for generic nasal spray

ALLEGAN, Mich Perrigo Co., a generic drugmaker, announced Tuesday that it has filed an application with the Food and Drug Administration to market a generic version of Alcon Laboratories` Patanase nasal spray. If successfully launched, Perrigo`s drug would be the first low-cost form of olopatadine hydrochloride nasal spray available in the U.S. The drug is used to treat allergies in adults and children. Last week Alcon challenged Perrigo in court, saying its generic version would infringe on its patents. Patent disputes between generic drugmakers and their branded counterparts are routine as companies fight to gain or retain market share. Shares of Perrigo Co. rose 31 cents to $97.86.
